The Franklin County Municipal Courthouse closed Wednesday due to emergency building maintenance and is expected to resume operations next Monday.
The court closed after a section of the building's fire protection system was taken offline for repairs.
Outstanding fire code violations identified during the Columbus Division of Fire's recent inspection, and the large number of people in the building also influenced the decision to close the court, Jodi Andes, a public information officer at the courthouse, said in a statement.
Just last month, the court released a statement listing structural, safety, and security concerns and challenged Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther’s decision to end plans to construct a new court building.
"The Court has shared its concerns about the building's condition with the City of Columbus, and we understand the City has begun some work — which we appreciate and will continue to follow," Andes said in a statement.
The building’s fire suppression system remains operational, and a fire watch protocol was implemented. The city is working to complete repairs as soon as possible, Jennifer Lockrey, City of Columbus' media relations manager, said in a statement.
"The safety of employees, court personnel and the public remains our priority," Lockrey said.
In-custody arraignment hearings will still be held, however the public will not be admitted into the courtroom gallery. All other cases will be rescheduled.
