A flood wall in Portsmouth, Ohio is seen on March 19, 2025. This wall was erected to block overflow from the Ohio River.

The Trump administration announced earlier this week plans to build a $33 billion natural gas power facility near Portsmouth.

The U.S. Department of Commerce said in a statement Tuesday that the project would be financed by Japan and would be operated by SB Energy, a subsidiary of the Japanese SoftBank Group.

The statement said the 9.2 gigawatt plant would be the largest gas-fired generating facility in the world.

It's part of a $550 billion trade deal with Japan.

It's unclear exactly where the plant will be built.

The U.S. Department of Energy still owns land near Piketon at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion plant site north of Portsmouth.

Pike County Economic Development Director Gary Arnett said Thursday he hasn't heard where the natural gas power plant site is.

Scioto County Commissioner Scottie Powell said he had no information about the project.

Portsmouth is located in Scioto County.
