JD Vance greets supporters at the Save America Rally at the Delaware County Fairgrounds, Saturday, April 23, 2022, in Delaware, Ohio.

After a period of silence, U.S. Senate candidate and author J.D. Vance is back with new campaign ads. One ad featuring his wife, Usha Vance, tells his life story, which seems odd for a candidate who rose to fame for writing a best-selling memoir.

In this week's episode of Snollygoster, Ohio's politics podcast from WOSU, hosts Mike Thompson and Steve Brown discuss the U.S. Senate race in Ohio.

Hi, my name is...

With 100 days or so until election day, we’re seeing more of Vance. He showed up at the Ohio State Fair last week. He’s been doing more interviews, aside from the ones he does on Fox News.

And he has a new TV ad out. It's his first in months. Meanwhile, his opponent Democrat Tim Ryan has been all over the airwaves.

The ad features Vance’s wife sitting at a kitchen table, cute pictures of Vance as a kid hugging his grandmother, a picture of him in his Maine Uniform and video of him playing with his kids.

This seems to be a shift to more moderate politics for Vance as the ad does not mention former President Trump or the culture war talking points Vance is known for.

Snollygioster of the week

It appears organizers of a rally featuring Vance and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis did not check on the availability of the venue before announcing the event.

WKBN television in Youngstown reports that the pro-Trump group Turning Point USA announced the August 19 rally would happen at the Maronite Center, an event venue in Youngstown. The venue started getting calls for more information and they were confused because the space is not available on that day.
