Episode 4: Burlesque

In this episode of Pop Columbus co-hosts Sean Edgar and Eric French look at the rising popularity of burlesque in Columbus, Ohio with performers Bianca Coal and Betty LeRoux.

Burlesque shows, which have roots all the way back to Shakespearean times, are becoming popular in Columbus with numerous troupes and independent artists performing throughout the city. Both performers we spoke to are currently independent artists but have performed in the past with the Ooh-La-Las troupe.

Coal and LeRoux talk about how burlesque is an avenue for performers to embrace their body, sexuality, and creative expression.

Burlesque shows are supported by a diverse and passionate audience. Eric talks with Theresa Howe of Columbus's German Village, who frequents burlesque shows every month, about why she enjoys burlesque.

Eric French is the staff audio engineer for WOSU and has worked as a musician/producer in music studios for 15 years. Horror hound, motorcycle enthusiast, and baseball fanatic, Eric brings a passion for all things Americana to WOSU’s newest podcast series.
Sean Edgar is an editor at Paste Magazine who has also written and photographed for Playboy, Stereogum and self-titled. A Columbus native, Sean spends most of his time frolicking in Clintonville with his half-dog half coyote companion, Harley.
