Episode 3: Vinyl Records

This week on Pop Columbus co-hosts Eric French and Sean Edgar go record shopping.

They discuss the popularity of vinyl records with Spoonful Records owner Brett Ruland, they talk with musician Patrick Buzzard about his unique approach to collecting albums at RPM Records in Clintonville, and they pose the question, “Can you really hear the difference?”

In this episode Eric played two versions of Left in the Dark by Uncle Tupelo, one from a compact disc and the other from a new vinyl record. Can you guess which version below is the record and which is from the CD?

Version one, is this a record or a CD?

Take two, is this a record or CD?

Some of the staff at WOSU participated in the challenge--Millenials, Gen Xers, Boomers--to varying degrees of success.  Even co-host Eric French guessed wrong!

As for the online version of our listening challenge, the vinyl record version of the song was the first clip.

Eric French is the staff audio engineer for WOSU and has worked as a musician/producer in music studios for 15 years. Horror hound, motorcycle enthusiast, and baseball fanatic, Eric brings a passion for all things Americana to WOSU’s newest podcast series.
