A 96-year-old woman is dead after being exposed to carbon monoxide at a home in Fairfield County on Thursday morning.

The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office said first responders received a call around 9:30 a.m. about an unresponsive person at a residence on Slough Road in Bloom Township, which is southeast of Canal Winchester and west of Lithopolis.

Officials say the woman was dead when first responders arrived. Several other people inside the house and a family pet showed signs of carbon monoxide exposure.

Two family members went to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for treatment. The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office said seven firefighters also went to the hospital as a precaution.

"The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office would like to remind residents of the importance of having working carbon monoxide detectors installed in their homes," the department wrote in a statement on social media.

The sheriff's office is investigating the incident.
