Columbus State Community College and the YMCA of Central Ohio are proposing a YMCA facility on the college's downtown campus.
The facility would include a drop-in child care center for students who are parents.
The new YMCA would be built on a college surface parking lot at East Long Street and Cleveland Avenue. The project's estimated cost is $38 million.
The college will hold a student vote in the fall to determine support for the project, including a student fee to fund most of the costs of the new facility.
If a majority support the fee, the plan would go to the Columbus State Board of Trustees and the Ohio Department of Higher Education for consideration.
Columbus State spokesperson Brent Wilder said in an email to WOSU that Columbus State and YMCA leadership have talked about the possibility of a YMCA location on Columbus State’s campus for several years.
Wilder said Columbus State has offered recreation and wellness programs at a small gym in Delaware Hall. That building is being prepared for renovations.
"A Columbus State YMCA would be a creative solution to bring a state-of-the-art facility to the student population far beyond what the college could otherwise offer," Wilder said.
