The Newark City Building houses several city departments, including the Newark Law Director's Office.

A man was hospitalized after he was shot by Newark police Friday morning.

Police said in a statement that officers responded to a report of a suspicious person at the YMCA Daycare at 470 W. Church Street around 7:15 a.m. Officers recognized the vehicle as the same one that fled from a neighboring community on Wednesday.

Police said the man in the vehicle had a handgun and did not follow instructions when he was asked to put it down and show his hands. The man who was shot was taken to a Columbus-area hospital. His condition is unknown. The man who was shot has not been identified.

The Ohio Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure anytime an Ohio officer's weapon is fired.

The Ohio Attorney General's Office will review the results of the investigation, which will be forwarded to the Licking County Prosecutor's Office.

The involved officers, who also have not been identified, have been placed on administrative leave.
