A former Franklin County Sheriff's Office jail deputy pleaded guilty on Friday in U.S. District Court to depriving an inmate of his civil rights by instigating an inmate fight in 2022.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio said in a statement Matthew Carey, 28, of Grove City, intentionally disclosed a pretrial detainee’s pending charge for raping a minor to another detainee. Officials said the other inmates did assault the victim.

Carey faces up to 10 years in prison.

Gmier McCall, the man Carey told about the charges, also faces 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to similar charges.

The attorney's office said Carey knew that disclosing the victim’s charges could mean other inmates at the jail would assault the man.
