A man is dead after being shot by Columbus police Tuesday night.

Officers went to the 4400 block of Hampton Woods Court in northeast Columbus on a call about domestic violence just after 9:40 p.m.

A caller told police they heard what they believed to be a man assaulting a female inside an apartment and threatening to kill her.

Around 10 p.m., officers at the scene said a man was shooting at them from inside the apartment and a female was being held hostage inside the apartment.

Members of the SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called to the scene.

An officer made contact with the man via phone, and along with negotiators, spoke to the man for more than an hour trying to resolve the incident.

Police say the man fired shots at SWAT officers multiple times.

Around 11:45 p.m., the man opened the apartment door with the female and a gun in his hand. The man raised the gun, and was then shot by multiple SWAT officers.

The female then ran to officers. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m.

The names of the officers who shot the man have not been released.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
