A former Franklin County middle school teacher who pleaded guilty to having sex with a student has been sentenced to six years in prison.
Benjamin Rutan, 42, worked as a language arts teacher and track and basketball coach at Norton Middle School in the South-Western City Schools District.
Rutan pleaded guilty in January to two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, which is a third-degree felony.
Five other counts, including sexual battery, were dropped in a plea deal.
Rutan will also have to register as a Tier II sex offender once he is released.
