Man dead, another injured, after boat capsizes at Hoover Reservoir

Updated March 20, 2024 at 12:46 p.m.

One man is dead and another man was hurt after a boat capsized at Hoover Reservoir Sunday evening.

Genoa Township Fire Chief Joe Ponzi told WOSU the boat had reportedly capsized just before 8 p.m. Sunday in the area of Walnut Valley Drive. He said one of the victims called 911 using a cell phone and a dispatcher was able to locate the men with that call.

The Franklin County Coroner's Office identified the man who died as 56 year-old Paul V. Parks.

Ponzi said several emergency boats responded to the capsized vessel, and the water temperature was around 46 degrees.

Ponzi said the two victims were brothers. Ponzi said the two men had just bought the boat and were out fishing.

Franklin County Coroner spokesperson Jeremy Blake said the man who died was pronounced dead at 12:33 a.m. Blake also said the office will identify the victim once next of kin is notified.

"Its a very unfortunate accident. I don't think people realize how cold it is...people don't realize how quickly you could become debilitated at that temperature," Ponzi said.

The other man is still being treated at Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
