Family members of former Ohio State and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins have filed a lawsuit against a truck driver and others for negligence in his death on a Florida freeway last year.

Attorney Rick Ellsely is representing his widow, Kalybrya, and his parents. A statement on the Ellsley Law Firm website refers to the Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Report that shows Haskins “was only feet away from making it safely across” I-595 in Broward County, “when he was struck and killed by an old dump truck.”

The statement goes on to say that the truck was going faster than the speed limit, carrying excessive cargo, traveling with brake system problems, and low tread tires. The lawsuit also alleges that Haskins had been drugged the night before he died and was possibly the target of blackmail and robbery.

Ellsely also notes that the truck driver refused to provide a blood sample to police at the scene. The truck driver's cell phone records have also not yet been released.

The Florida Department of Transportation and the rental car company Haskins used were also named in the lawsuit. He had left the car on the side of the freeway, before walking across it. Haskins wife had called 911 and reported he had run out of gas.

The lawsuit seeks at least $100,000 in damages.
