The case of a missing Columbus woman whose body was found Wednesday in a southern Ohio landfill is now being treated as a homicide investigation.

The body of Renee Benedetti was found at a Rumpke landfill off U.S. 68 in Brown County, about an hour southeast of Cincinnati.

"We started our search on Feb. 20, 2023. And that lasted just about two and a half weeks, where yesterday, March 8, 2023, we ended up locating an individual," said Commander Mark Denner with CPD's homicide bureau.

Denner said investigators were able to confirm Benedetti was seen in Columbus on Jan. 26. About 18 hours later, her boyfriend, Gene Scott, 46, was located in Kentucky and was eventually extradited back to Columbus.

While authorities are pleased that the investigation has made progress, Denner said this is just one step in a lengthy process. "We still have a long way to go as far as the the judicial system, and we have to make sure that we see this to the end, so we have done our due diligence and we have done our job," he said.

Scott is scheduled for arraignment Friday morning on one count of murder.
