A federal investigation is underway after Republican Ohio Senators were sent what is believed to be human feces in the mail. The deliveries were intercepted at three locations, with one addressed to each Republican senate member.

A spokesperson for the Ohio Senate said packages of what is believed to be human feces were sent to each of the 25 Republican members. Postal workers caught some deliveries in Cleveland and Akron while postal workers inside the Statehouse discovered others. None of the packages made their way to a senator’s office.

Republican Senate Caucus Spokesperson John Fortney said the motive behind the deliveries was unclear, but on a personal note called the senders “pathetic, little cowards.” Fortney added that the safety of all 33 senate members and staff is a priority.

The U.S. Postal Inspector, State Highway Patrol, and sergeant at arms are investigating.
