The Franklin County Board of Commissioners voted Thursday in support of a new multi-million-dollar affordable housing development on Columbus' far west side.

Commissioners approved a request for up for $49 million in tax-exempt, multi-family housing revenue bonds for the development, known as Darby Crossing Apartments.

Carlie Boos, executive director of the Affordable Housing Alliance of Central Ohio, praised the Commissioners' decision, adding that even before the pandemic, 54,000 Franklin County families paid more than half their income toward housing.

"What they did is they showed a commitment to affordable housing solutions, to making sure that we have safe decent affordable housing for workers in Franklin County," Boos said.

The project consists of 260 one- to four-bedroom apartments, designed to house people who make 60% of the annual median income, which would be about $40,000 for a family of four.
