With just two days left, Columbus has seen 173 homicides in 2020. Columbus Police Deputy Chief Michael Woods says this is the most homicides the city has seen in a single year.
"We’ve never seen anything quite like this," Woods says. "A lot of multiple homicides, and the frequency. It’s almost daily that we’re experiencing a shooting or some type of felonious assaul. Homicides are coming in at quite that high rate as well."
Most recently, police found two women dead and a man in critical condition after a stabbing at Summit Park Apartments on Morse Road.
Woods says there is no pattern to the homicides.
“We’re seeing all kinds of homicides,” Woods says. “There’s some gang-related information on some of them, there’s drug-related, there’s domestic. So it’s the full gamut of what we’re experiencing.”
The previous yearly record was 144, set in 2017. Columbus passed that milestone in November.
