Columbus Police now say the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy inside a Hilltop home this week is being investigated as a homicide.Police initially said in a Monday evening press release that witnesses reported Demitri Lifte Gore accidentally shot himself while handling a gun inside a Warren Avenue home.

"There is no evidence or indication that this incident is anything more than an unfortunate tragedy,” the first statement said.

A Tuesday evening release cast doubt on the original story.

“Further investigation has deemed that this case be classified and investigated as a Homicide moving forward,” the update said. “Questions still remain as to exactly how the shooting occurred, who was involved and how the firearm was obtained.”

No criminal charges had been filed as of late Tuesday.
