Whitehall Police Officer Hospitalized After Accidental Shooting

Police in Whitehall say an officer is expected to recover after accidentally shooting himself Wednesday morning.Sergeant John Grebb says Officer Tanner Williams, a four-year veteran of the force, shot himself in the left hand around 7 a.m. Wednesday when his 9-millimeter handgun accidentally fired on the department's firing range.

"We're still trying to determine what happened," Grebb said at a Wednesday morning press conference.

Grebb says Williams works the overnight shift and was using the range after work.

Grebb says Officer Williams spends a lot of time on the firing range and was alone there at the time of the shooting. Grebb says it's common for officers to be alone on the firing range.

Grebb says the extent of Williams' injuries were yet to be determined, but he was alert and conscience while being transported to a hospital.
