The family of a man who died as the result of alleged neglect at a Columbus nursing home has filed a civil lawsuit.
The family of 56-year old James Chandler is suing Whetstone Gardens and Care Center on Olentangy River Road, along with several nurses and doctors. Chandler died on March 5, 2017 from septic shock.
Attorney David Shroyer says health care workers were negligent.
“Failure to observe and monitor the bedsore, failure to properly treat it, and failure to properly get him to the hospital early enough to prevent the death from the overwhelming infection that he had,” Shroyer says.
A second patient at Whetstone also died under similar circumstances.
Ohio Attorney General David Yost recently announced the indictment of seven nurses on 34 charges related to the facility's neglect. Three nurses—Sandra Blazer, Jessica Caldwell and Kimberly Potter—were indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter, gross patient neglect and patient neglect as a result of failing to provide timely medical treatment to the patient.
“We’re seeking wrongful death damages, which is the damages to the next of kin—in other words, the mental anguish they went through from losing their son and their brother,” Shroyer says.
Shroyer says the lawsuit comes after family members discovered more information about the nursing home’s questionable practices.
“They didn’t realize the significance of the lack of care that had been given until the attorney general had concluded their investigation,” Shroyer says
