Smart Columbus is offering $30,000 in tax rebates to taxi services that buy an electric vehicle for their fleet.

There are 10 of the $3,000 rebates available, and interested parties can apply through Smart Columbus' website. According to the group, the goal of the rebates is to speed the adoption of electric vehicles, capture data of the cars' usage and educate the public in the process.

The deadline for the first round of rebates is June 29. Smart Columbus expects to offer another round of rebates this October.

In the fall, Smart Columbus will partner with the Columbus College of Art and Design to design wraps for public electric vehicle charging stations.

The project is funded by the Paul C. Allen Philanthropies. The group gave $10 million to Columbus as the winner of the Smart City Challenge.
