Watch Live: President Trump Addresses Florida Shooting

Chelsea Beck/NPR

President Trump is speaking for the first time about the shooting at a high school in South Florida that left at least 17 people dead.

Authorities say 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz killed at least 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Wednesday. According to NPR, Cruz was a former student who had been expelled for disciplinary reasons. Authorities say he opened fire outside the school with an AR-15 rifle, which he legally purchased.

In a Twitter poston Wednesday, President Trump offered "prayers and condolences to the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school."

"To Trump's point of the shooter being 'mentally disturbed,' Trump signed a Republican bill last year that makes it easier for people who are mentally ill to purchase guns," NPR reports.
