The Pike County Sheriff’s Office says outside agencies will handle the investigation into a deputy’s fatal shooting of a man on Thursday.

The office has also identified the man killed as James Burks of Peebles.

Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader says James Burks, 35, was shot around 4 a.m. Thursday on State Route 124 in Piketon.

Reader says a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle and Burks and two other suspects fled after the vehicle pulled into a driveway. Reader says the deputy chased them on foot, made contact with Burks, and shot him during an altercation.

Reader says he’s turned the case over to investigators from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

“This is to ensure that the investigation is completely independent of my office,” Reader said.

The deputy was treated at a hospital and released. Authorities didn’t immediately identify him.
