Columbus Police say a teenager and a Hilltop resident were killed in a shooting in the west Columbus neighborhood on Monday.

Police responding to a report of a shooting in front of 215 South Wayne Avenue say they found an abandoned SUV that was still running, and Quentin Smith, 17, shot in a nearby alley.

Smith died a short time later at Mount Carmel West.

A spokesperson for Columbus City Schools said Smith was a sophomore at West High School.

Police say a subsequent investigation showed bullet holes in the residence, and after no one answered the door, police forced their way in and found a man shot.

He was pronounced dead by medics at the scene. Police withheld his name, pending notification of family.

No arrests were reported, although police say some witnesses reported a Honda Civic with tinted windows speeding away from the scene. Police were questioning two other teenagers who were reportedly in the SUV at the time of the shooting.

The deaths bring the number of homicides in Columbus this year to 125. That’s the second-highest in the city's recorded history, ranking only behind the 139 homicides in 1991.
