Ohio’s government watchdog says a former administrator with the state Department of Higher Education used state resources to lobby for her personal business.
TheInspector General’s office says Lauren McGarity, the former director of special projects at the Department of Higher Education, identified herself as a state employee and used her email to contact Ohio Senate staff to discuss legislation that would benefit her personal business.
"McGarity also made numerous phone calls using her personal phone during the work day to further her private business interests, including WinWin Inc., and her son’s business," the office said in a statement.
McGarity is the founder of Win Win Inc., a Columbus business that entered into a series of contracts with state prison officials to teach incarcerated students. The Inspector General also found wrongdoing in McGarity’s failure to accurately report her work hours on over 300 occasions.
The Inspector General's office say the report has been forwarded to Columbus and Franklin County prosecutors for consideration.
