The state of Ohio and its attorney general are joining the fight against new federal rules aimed at protecting streams.
Mike DeWine is joining several other attorneys general in a lawsuit against the Stream Protection Rule. It was announced last month and looks to protect the waterways by banning mining activity within 100 feet of streams.
It also brings new requirements for companies on bringing land back to pre-mining conditions.
DeWine calls the rule an overreach and a last gasp by the Obama administration.
The lawsuit filed in D.C. federal court this week seeks to have the new rules tossed out, and for the Department of the Interior to revert to standards laid out in the Surface Mining Act.
