Ohio ranks fourth highest for thefts of catalytic converters over the past 8 years.

A report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau finds Ohio had more than 1400 catalytic converters stolen.

The devices are used to clean a car’s exhaust gases. The metal inside can be sold at a recycling center for up to $240.

The NICB says insured thefts in the country are up 23 percent since 2008. Illinois was the only Midwestern state with more thefts than Ohio. California topped the list.
