Columbus Castings Sale, Shutdown Approved By Judge

A bankruptcy judge has reportedly approved the sale of the Columbus Castings foundry to an owner who doesn't plan to reopen the facility.

The Columbus Dispatch reports a judge announced the decision on Tuesday.

The Parsons Avenue foundry shut down amid financial trouble earlier this year. It was the largest steel foundry in the country and employed about 800 people before the May layoffs.

In a written statement issued in May, the foundry's owner, Constellation Enterprises, said it “suffered from significant operational issues” at the Columbus foundry.

A slowdown in rail shipping also affected business at Columbus Castings, which manufactured rail car carriage components.
