A new independent poll says U.S. Senator Rob Portman of Ohio continues to hold a commanding lead over his Democratic challenger Ted Strickland.
The survey by Quinnipiac University is its first of this campaign to measure likely voters. Like Quinnipiac’s previous polls of registered voters, it shows Portman with a lead, this time nine percent.
A July Quinnipiac poll of registered voters gave Portman a seven-point lead over the former Ohio governor.
The latest polls says when it comes to Strickland and Portman, women are evenly divided, while Portman has a nearly 20 point lead among men. It also gives him a 22-point lead among independents.
Strickland holds a nearly 40 point lead among non-white voters.
The Swing State poll showed Republican incumbent Senators in Pennsylvania and Florida locked in much closer races.
