Voters will decide today whether to approve or reject Issue 1 – the measure that would change Columbus City Council’s at-large representation to a ward-based system.
Franklin County Board of Elections spokesman Ben Piscitelli says that because few voters chose to vote early, he expects today’s turnout to be small.
“We had about a grand total of about 4,000 people either vote (early) by mail or in-person for this special election. And there are 527,000 people registered in the city of Columbus. So that would indicate a very light turnout today,” Piscitelli said.
Piscitelli says Tuesday’s balloting is going smoothly. He says there were only minor problems before the polls opened at 6:30 a.m.
“We really didn’t have any problems this morning, (other than) the usual things. Some poll workers decided they wouldn’t show up for work for the day, they call in sick or whatever. But we have people standing by and were able to plug in those gaps,” Piscitelli said.
Polls throughout Columbus will remain open until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
