Accused Columbus Cop Killer Pleads Not Guilty

Franklin County Jail

The Clintonville man charged with fatally shooting a Columbus SWAT officer has pleaded not guilty.

Columbus Police were serving a felony warrant against Lincoln Rutledge on April 10 when they say he fired the bullet that hit Officer Steven Smith. Smith died two days later.

Rutledge previously worked for Ohio State as a computer security engineer, but he went on leave in February and never returned to work. Friends and family describe a man who stopped taking medication and saw his life fall into disarray.

On Friday, Rutledge pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, attempted murder, felonious assault and aggravated arson.

An 11-count indictment includes three death penalty specifications.

Rutledge remains in jail after being denied bond.
