Ohio’s auditor says the latest surprise head count at several charter schools shows they’re making progress, but still need improvement.
Auditor Dave Yost says the head count performed in November showed all but one of the schools counted had attendance rates higher than 73 percent. Twenty-three percent of the schools counted reportedly had attendance severely below numbers on state records.
“It’s an extremely positive sign that we are seeing more students in the classrooms of our charter schools,” Yost said
Yost says auditors found three charters operating as online schools, or E-schools, even though they were registered as site-based schools.
The auditor's office conducted a similar count in 2014 at 30 of Ohio's charter schools. The office said the results of that count showed more than half of the schools reported enrollment numbers higher than the actual head counts.
