Residents in swing state Ohio could register to vote online under a proposal being reviewed by a state legislative panel.
The bill would direct Ohio's elections chief to create a secure, online registration process. Applicants would need to provide an Ohio driver's license or state ID card number, along with other information.
Currently, Ohio voters can update their addresses online but not register to vote.
An Ohio House committee plans to hear testimony and possibly make changes to the bill on Tuesday. The Senate already has passed the measure.
The proposal also would allow Ohioans to declare their political party affiliation when registering to vote or updating addresses.
Voters currently are considered affiliated with the party whose ballot they last cast in a primary. Residents could continue to remain unaffiliated.
