Planned Parenthood Probe Prompts Legislation From Ohio GOP

Republican lawmakers in the Ohio House want abortion clinics to bury or creamate fetal remains.

Ohio hospitals and abortion providers would have to dispose of fetal remains by burial or cremation under legislation being introduced by Republican state lawmakers.

The proposal, announced Monday by Republican representatives in the Ohio House, comes after a state attorney general's investigation into Planned Parenthood.

Attorney General Mike DeWine says his office found no evidence that Planned Parenthood made money from aborted fetuses, but his report instead criticized Planned Parenthood facilities for disposing of fetal remains in landfills.

Planned Parenthood calls the report "inflammatory." The group says it follows Ohio law and uses the same practices as hospitals and other facilities, which generally contract with companies to dispose of medical waste.

Under a separate bill, women who get abortions could decide whether a fetus's remains would be buried or cremated.
