Man Charged With Assaulting Wife Accused Of Suffocating Sons

The husband of an Ohio woman accused of suffocating her three sons has been charged with sexually assaulting her when she was a teenager.

An indictment, made public Thursday, says Joseph Pilkington, 43, of Bellefontaine, was considered the woman's stepfather when he impregnated her in 2009 when she was 17. It says he had lived in her house since she was 9 and held himself out as her father.

The woman, Brittany Pilkington, 23, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of aggravated murder and could face a death sentence if convicted.

A message was left with an attorney who previously represented the husband.

The Associated Press doesn't generally identify people who may be sexual assault victims, but Brittany Pilkington's name and image were widely published following her arrest.
