Body Of Missing Man Recovered

Columbus police say the body of one of two missing half brothers was recovered Wednesday. Police say 20 year old Anthony Martin's body was located on a sandbar on the Olentangy River three miles downstream from a low-head dam.

Police began searching a section of the river last weekend when a witness reported Martin and his step-brother Joseph Welch were seen at the Dodridge Street dam. The river was bankfull at the time with strong current.

Police divemaster Stephen Kaethow says the low-head dam makes for a difficult search.

"You can't put divers in there with them, because everything that comes over the low-head dam kind of gets trapped right there in a boil. And you'll have five, six-hundred-pound logs in there just kind of getting busted up," says Kaethow.

The search for Welch will continue on Thursday.  Family members keep vigil on the shoreline as teams of divers take turns searching.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers partially closed sluice gates on a reservoir dam 30 miles north to lower the water levels. Kaethow says that will help search teams.
