Gov. John Kasich has announced the creation of Ohio's first-ever police standards board governing the proper use of deadly force, recruiting and hiring.
The panel was one recommendation from a task force that was formed to study police/community relations after several police-involved shootings.
The board will also create standards for police agencies involving local community interaction, such as addressing safety issues and educating people on the daily challenges faced by officers.
Kasich said Wednesday that police officers and community members will sit on the 12-member Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board.
The announcement came as Kasich accepted recommendations from a police and community relations panel he created following protests over a series of police-involved shootings in Ohio and nationally.
The governor says an annual report will list agencies that have not adopted standards involving use of force and hiring and recruiting.
