Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death in Ohio, surpassing auto accidents.

The head of federal drug policy planned to meet with state and local officials while visiting Ohio for a state conference on opiates.

Director of National Drug Control Policy Michael Botticelli was scheduled to be in Columbus Tuesday as the keynote speaker at an Ohio conference on opiates and other drugs.

Botticelli planned to attend a breakfast meeting with Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and central Ohio law enforcement. He was also scheduled to participate in a roundtable discussion with health care leaders on the impact of opioids on infants and expectant mothers.

Botticelli was approved by the U.S. Senate as the overseer of federal drug policy in February. He has emphasized prevention and treatment and has been in recovery for more than 25 years.
