Jerrie Mock Dies At 88

One of Central Ohio’s most famous natives has died.

Geraldine "Jerrie" Mock was the first woman to fly solo around the world in her plane "The Spirit of Columbus." Her grandson says she died at her Florida home Tuesday after being in failing health for months.

A statue was recently dedicated to Mock at Port Columbus.

Dubbed "the flying housewife" at the time, the native of Newark was a suburban mother of three but also an experienced pilot who studied aeronautical engineering at Ohio State University. Jerrie Mick was 88 years old.
