Court: Harris Can't Be Sued In Attendance-Rigging Scandal

A state appeals court says the former Columbus city schools superintendent can't be sued in the recent attendance data-scrubbing scandal. A state appeals court on Thursday sided with former superintendent Gene Harris. The court agrees that Harris can't be held liable in civil court for administrators changing attendance numbers to manipulate the schools' performance ratings. The parent of a student at Medina Middle School sued the school board, Harris and other administrators in November 2012. He claimed that district employees making changes to student data harmed his son because making the school appear better deprived kids of the help afforded for failing schools. The court ruled that Harris was immune in her official capacity.
