Nationwide Children's hospital today is mourning. A researcher was struck and killed Wednesday by a hospital shuttle bus. A second employee was seriously injured. Investigators are still sorting out what happened. Killed was 35-year-old David Newsom, who was technical director for the Biomedical Genomics Core in the Research Institute at the hospital. Peter White, director of the Biomedical Genomics Core, was hospitalized with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. A Columbus Police report says David Newsom and Peter White were walking in the street next to a construction zone fence when they were struck from behind. Newsom was killed. White was seriously injured. The 61 year old driver of the shuttle bus has not been charged. But he has been placed on leave until the investigation is finished. The police report lists "failure to yield" as a contributing factor in the accident. There were pavement markings on Children's Drive where the accident occurred and a posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour. The driver's stated speed was 15 miles per hour.
