Same-sex couples were expected to appear at the Franklin County court house on Valentineâs Day to request marriage licenses. Itâs part of a nationwide effort to achieve the right for same-sex couples to marry. Tom Morgan is the lead organizer in Ohio for the group Get Equal. âWeâll have representatives from Freedom Ohio there. Theyâre the group that came up with the petition and got it approved by the attorney general and really got it going,â? Morgan said. Voters amended the state constitution in 2004 banning same-sex marriage. Morgan says various equal rights groups in Ohio are seeking the signatures of 385,000 people to get their marriage equality proposal on the ballot possibly as soon as this year. âWe believe that Ohioans donât feel today the same way they did way back and 2004. Polls that come out are showing that America is changing in its attitudes towards marriage equality,â? Morgan said. Morgan said gay rights group will not try to seek legislative approval from Ohio lawmakers. He cited opposition by Republicans and other conservative legislators as the reason.
