Schools Panel Recruits OSU For Eighth Grade Math App

A panel appointed by Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman is expected to recommend changes for the city school district in April. But, Friday, the commission announced it enrolled Ohio State's Athletic Department to help city eighth graders learn math. "8th grade math is one of the most difficult barriers to overcome for students." Says Columbus Education Director Eric Fingerhut. Fingerhut and Ohio State Univeristy Athletic Director, Gene Smith, say the commission will launch a mobile phone app this fall that will use Ohio State football situations to help students understand math concepts like integers and equations. "You know, kids love to play video games. So we're hopeful that in their off time, they'll use it." Says Smith. The mobile phone app can be used by students to supplement classroom instruction. It is not part of a curriculum. Fingerhut says the commission will also work to provide access to instructional technology for students who lack mobile devices. "Between the education commission and the mayor's office that you will see a very strong commitment to closing the digital divide so all students can have access to these tools." Says Fingerhut. The mobile app project is funded by Battelle.
