Supreme Court Dismisses Lawsuit Against Gay Marriage Proposal

The Ohio Supreme Court has given a legal victory to supporters of gay marriage in Ohio. The high court on Friday dismissed a lawsuit against a proposed constitutional amendment that looks to legalize gay marriage. The legal challenge came from the Ohio Campaign to Protect Marriage, which helped push the current ban on gay marriage into law in 2004. The group argued that summary language approved hy Attorney General Mike DeWine was too vague. "They’re terrified that the language in the Freedom to Marry and Religious Freedom Amendment strikes a cord with Ohio voters in a rural part of the state and with religious conservatives," said Ian James, co-founder of Freedom Ohio, which is now gathering signatures in effort to put a proposal before voters the November 2013 ballot. If placed on the ballot and approved by voters, it would let two people marry regardless of gender. It would also let churches decline to perform or recognizes marriages.
