Accused Soldier Recalled In Ohio As Genial Star

Former neighbors in Ohio say the soldier suspected in the shootings of 16 Afghan civilians was a hero in the neighborhood where they grew up and was known for being respectful and urging others to do the same. Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales went to high school in the Cincinnati suburb of Norwood. Michael Blevins lived on the same street as Bales and says everyone knew him as "Bobby." Blevins says Bales was a "stand-up man" and neighborhood hero who was respectful of older residents, loved children and admonished troublemakers. Blevins and his sister, Michelle Caddell, say Bales was the youngest of five boys. Caddell describes the structure of the boys' upbringing as "God, country, family and you." They say Bales' father died several years ago.
