Amid NCAA Probe, Tressel Steps Down

Jim Tressel is out as Ohio State university's football coach. Jim Tressel today resigned as the NCAA investigates the Buckeyes for possible rules violations. Tressel says in a statement that he met with university officials and agreed that it is in Ohio State's best interest that he resign. He said the appreciation that he and his wife have for the Buckeye Nation is immeasurable. The school says Luke Fickell will serve as interim head coach for the 2011-2012 season. Fickle served as an assistant coach under Tressel. Recruitment for a new head coach - which is expected to include external and internal candidates - will not commence until the conclusion of the 2011-2012 season. Athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement "We look forward to refocusing the football program on doing what we do best - representing this extraordinary University and its values on the field, in the classroom, and in life." OSU President Gordon Gee said the decision to accept the resignation came after consultation with the senior leadership of the Board of Trustees. Gee said he has been actively reviewing matters attendant to our football program, and said "The University's enduring public purposes and its tradition of excellence continue to guide our actions." Tressel has come under fire since admitting he knew that OSU several players sold championship rings and other memorabilia. The five players and Tressel were already suspended for the first five games of the season. Tressel faced even more question after reports that some players may have been getting special deals from a local car salesman.
