The effort to repeal Ohio's new collective bargaining law has entered its next phase. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine Friday certified summary language of the referendum seeking to repeal Senate Bill 5 which severely limits public employee collective bargaining power. The attorney general certified the short version of two summaries that were submitted by opponents of the new law. Opponents now must collect 231,000 signatures in the next three months to place the question on the November ballot. The measure signed earlier this month by Gov. John Kasich would prohibit public employee strikes, eliminate binding arbitration and require all state and local government employees pay 15 percent of their health insurance costs. Republican supporters of the measure say it will save state and local governments at least $1 billion. Unions and Democrats say it will neuter public employee bargaining power.
