Evidence of Salmonella has been found at a central Ohio egg farm that has links to two Iowa farms that recalled thousands of eggs earlier this year.
Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. is the nation's largest egg seller and distributer. In a press release, the company says it's recalling 288,000 eggs it purchased from Ohio Fresh Eggs located in Croton, about 40 miles northeast of Columbus. The Croton farm is financially backed by Austin "Jack" DeCoster, the man who owns one of the Iowa farms blamed for a Salmonella outbreak that made about 1,600 people sick.
Vice president of the Ohio Poultry Association Jim Chakeresis says this latest strain of Salmonella was found during routine testing now required by law.
"While that is going on, the farm holds any eggs from that particular flock, and apparently what has happened is a load of those eggs, mistakenly due to human error, was sent to the facility that has now recalled the eggs," Chakeresis says.
No illnesses have been reported, and a Cal-Maine Foods press release says the Ohio Fresh eggs were bought but not distributed in Ohio. Neither Cal-Maine Foods or Ohio Fresh Eggs immediately responded to requests for comment.
