Expert on Single Gender Education Warns of "Train Wreck" Without Careful Planning

Columbus public schools Supt. Gene Harris is proposing two single gender middle schools - one for boys and one for girls.

Those two schools would join a handful of other such schools across the country. A national expert on single gender education says there are about 520 single gender schools in the U-S. Leonard Sax notes, most are coed schools with single sex classrooms. Only 90 are completely single gender campuses.

Looking at all of them, though, Sax admits, the success rates are mixed.

Leonard Sax is executive director of the National Association for Single Sex Public Education. The seven-year-old organization is based in the Philadelphia-metro area.
