The Republican-led Ohio House has voted to shrink the state's popular early voting period that drew long lines before the Nov. 4 election.
The bill passed 53-41 today, largely along party lines. It reduces the start of in-person early voting from 35 days before Election Day to 20 days. It also eliminates the one-week window that allowed voters to register and vote on the same day.
Republicans claim the same-day voting invites fraud. They pushed the bill over the objections of Democrats and some election experts, who accused the GOP of ramming through changes without understanding the consequences.
About 1.5 million people voted during the 35-day early voting period this fall.
